Understanding Memecoins

Bitcoin, Blockchain, Crypto...

Do these terms still seem complicated to you?

Just as the internet seemed strange a few years ago, and today we can't live without it, the world of cryptocurrencies is coming to transform our lives in the same way.

At first, everything can seem scary and exhausting, yet another one more thing to learn... But don't worry!

This guide was made to help you start easy in the world of cryptocurrencies in a simple and direct way. Let's explore the basic concepts and help you understand how to start.

Cryptocurrency

What are these crypto coins?

Cryptocurrencies are digital coins that use cryptography to secure transactions. Unlike traditional money, which is issued by central banks, cryptocurrencies can be created by anyone and operate on computer networks called blockchains.

How do they work?

Cryptocurrencies are based on blockchain technology, which records all transactions in a public and distributed ledger. Each transaction is verified by a network of computers and added to the next block on the chain. This process ensures the transparency and security of transactions.

Famous examples

Bitcoin: Created in 2009, it is the first and most well-known cryptocurrency. It functions as a medium of exchange and store of value.

Ethereum: Introduced in 2015, it allows the creation of smart contracts, which are programs that can be used to automate and enforce transactions and agreements between parties.

Solana: Launched in 2020, Solana is known for its high transaction speed and low fees. This makes it ideal for various uses, from small purchases to complex applications.

Blockchain

What is a Blockchain?

Blockchain is the technology that underpins cryptocurrencies. Think of it as a digital ledger, but instead of being stored in a single place, like the servers of a large corporation or government institution, it is distributed across multiple computers around the world. This distribution is called decentralization, and makes them safer and more transparent.

One of the most important features of blockchain is its immutability: all transactions recorded on it cannot be altered by anyone. This makes blockchain the most secure and transparent way to conduct monetary transactions, as all transactions are visible to everyone, but no one can alter them after they are recorded.

How does it work?

When a transaction is made, it is grouped with other transactions into a "block". These blocks are organized in chronological order, forming a "chain" of blocks, or a blockchain.

Each block contains a unique code (called a hash) that also includes the code of the previous block, ensuring that all blocks are securely connected. If someone tried to alter a transaction, the block's code would change, breaking the sequence and alerting the network to the attempted fraud.

In addition, the blockchain is maintained by many different computers around the world, known as "nodes" or "miners". These computers work together to verify and record new transactions. Because the blockchain does not rely on a single server, it is highly resistant to attacks and fraud, as there is no single vulnerable point that can be attacked.

Additional security comes from the process of verifying transactions, where computer nodes securing the network use cryptography to validate that only legitimate transactions are recorded, and no one is moving resources they don't own or signing messages they shouldn't.

Memecoins

What are Memecoins?

Memecoins are a type of cryptocurrency inspired by memes. They usually start as a joke or a meme, but can quickly gain popularity when the meme is widely used and shared.

Memecoins are created more for fun than for practical use, but can become valuable as more people become interested in them.

Famous Examples

DOGEcoin: Created in 2013 as a parody of Bitcoin, based on the Shiba Inu dog meme. Despite its humorous beginnings, DOGEcoin has gained a large community and significant value, being used in various transactions and even sponsoring events.

Shiba Inu ($SHIB): The DOGE of Ethereum, SHIB was created in 2020 and quickly gained popularity, in part due to the support of a strong and active community, and a massive donation made to India during COVID relief.

$PEPE: Inspired by Pepe the Frog, the most popular internet meme for over a decade, this memecoin also gained notoriety and attracted one of the largest fan community.
